It was one of those whims really. I was booked to shoot for several hours with a stylist friend at Dreghorn studio in Glasgow and on seeing a casting call I decided to tag on an extra hour for some general studio fun with Kyahri Cosplay.
Unbenknownst to me I had met Kyahri under a different guise a couple of years ago at DOJ Con 2013.
This time Kyahri was basing her costume around the League of Legends character, Mafia Jinx. (for those not in the know, LOL, is a game), a kind of anime hybrid of a 20's flapper. She hadn't done a huge amount of studio work before, but took to it well and soon got her character blasting at all 4 walls.
Anyway we managed to fill most of an hour messing about with poses, developing evil plans, looking daydreamy and generally just playing with the character and look that Kyahri had worked so hard to create. It was an interesting shoot for me as we were working on a character as much as the look itself, so some of the posing and structure of the shoot was very different from a more day to day fashion or beauty shoot. Both this shoot and the shoot that preceded it also allowed me to work and develop some ideas I've been working on for a shoot based around the 2000 AD character, Halo Jones.
Yes, I know I'm supposed to be a serious wedding photographer, but the quiet winter period does give me a chance to have a little playtime and work on some of my own projects. And as with using fashion/beauty photography to inform my approach to weddings, I can use these forays into more esoteric themes to add a little flavour to my work.
All the shots were taken against a white backdrop. The first using red gels at different power on the backdrop, the second with no lights on the backdrop and the third with a high key setup and a little post tinting. The model herself was lit with a long gridded softbox from the front/side and a smaller octagonal box on the other side from the front.
Now, apparently I just have to arrange some firing rockets or blasts in post production. A little challenge for my Photoshop skills.
