The second of my guest blogs is another profile. This time from the perspective of one of Scotland's designers. I met Christine through nicci.n and have had the good fortune to shoot some of her pieces on location and in the studio. She likes to mix fabrics and materials to create exciting and deceptively simple looking clothes. The picture below is from a 2011 shoot with the models, Nicole Abbott and Gemma Chan.  C.Watson I graduated from Heriot Watt University (Scottish Boarders) with a Masters Degree in 2010.Whilst studying at the campus I had the opportunity to do work experience with the university as a Garment Technologist. This entailed assisting the fashion and textile design students during their studies. After I graduated from Heriot Watt I remained at the campus and continued to work on a volunteer, and this allowed me to work closely with the staff as well as the academic students. Working for the university gave me great opportunities to prosper as a designer myself, by allowing me access to facilities and allowing me to take part in a competition for the university for the Converge Challenge. This meant having to compete with other students and staff ranging from engineers to scientists from other universities across Scotland. The aim of the competition is to come up with a good business plan, the winner receives £25,000 to start up their own business. Through the competition I was able to find an appropriate name, C.Watson, and am now director/designer for this Brand and have been able to takepart in some of the Fashion events in Glasgow and Edinburgh to help me establish my own brand presence. Through mycollege and uni life I have had the privilege to work alongside my very goodfriend Nicola Napier who has also flourished with her own brand name nicci.n. I was able to work with Nicola and help with the production of a collection that she had designed for a boutique in Edinburgh. We were also given the opportunity by another good friend Katy Bell to display our labels in her boutique in Edinburgh called De La Sole. The shop allowed me to look at potential customers; surprisingly I soon discovered that my market would open up to a wider audience who would gladly be seen to be wearing my label. I have gained a lot in these past few years and I have been lucky enough to have worked with some of the most talented people within the Fashion industry. Also to witnessand watch a number of young graduates go on to flourish and to maketheir names in the world. I was also proud at the fact that 6 of the students from Heriot Watt were up for nominations at the Scottish awards as young graduates, and knowing that next year there could be more students going up for an award from Heriot Watt. I have continued with the quest to produce more for the C.Watson brand and look forward to entering the fashion events e.g. Inspire the Attire 2 on 17th August. Through another event with the Bold Souls ‘’Prohibition Glamour’’, I was given the offer to sell my label in Anthea’s boutiques in Edinburgh. I have also been given another opportunity to enter my business idea for the Converge Challenge at the university for the third time, in the hope that one day I will be able to produce a lot more for the C.Watson brand. I hope that one day I will have a boutique of my own. |
